History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day is approaching and you might be surprised to hear how casually this occasion started.

In 1909, Sonaro Todd was listening to a church sermon in Washington DC on the topic of Mother’s Day.

Afterwards she asked the minister why Fathers did not also have day of celebration?

Her father was a veteran of the Civil War, a farmer and a widower who raised Sonara and five siblings.

And so, as the story goes the next year in 1910 all the churches in the local area marked the first Father’s Day.

By 1936 the first article (in the Newcastle Sun) speaking of Father’s Day had found its way to Australia … and the rest is history.

September was chosen as the time to mark the occasion as it fell between Christmas and Mother’s Day.

To celebrate Father’s Day this year, why not consider Doyle Bridge Hotel – it’s the perfect venue to bring your family together on this special day.
